Herndon Flyers Game Reports

Memorial Day Weekend Virginian Tournament

The girls had a very successful tournament this weekend taking second place overall and compiling a record of 3 - 2 with 19 goals.  They started the tournament a little slow, losing to Reston by a score of 0 - 1.  They had great defense, but just did not seem to get the offense started.  Kelsey and Colleen played excellent in goal.  Maggie was very energetic and took two very hard falls during the game and returned both times.

The girls really took to heart the loss to Reston and turned it on against McLean.  With great defensive play by Megan, Silvanna, Stephani, and Jen, the team held McLean to zero goals.  McLean is a very capable team and this was quite a feat for them.  Lauren scored a great goal by following through on a goalie bobbled ball (like she has done all season), and Kelsey assisted Lauren in the second goal, sending a great crossing pass right to Lauren who put it in for the goal.  Shortely before this goal, McLean had an opportunity with Colleen on the ground which was just saved by Megan who kicked the ball out of bounds.  It was a very exciting game to watch - great job.

The next morning, the Flyers took on a hapless team from Pennsylvania and beat them 12 - 1.  The team was clearly out-played by all the competition and the flyers scored even when they pulled the offensive line back. But this game combined with Reston beating McLean put the Flyers in second place and in the semi-finals against the Fury.

This was the game of the weekend for the Flyers.  Down 1 - 0 at half-time, Erin took the scoring responsibility on herself and scored three goals in a row with Lauren scoring the final goal.  Colleen and Kelsey were again steller in goal allowing only one goal.  This game really showed that the Flyers never get down and are never out of a game - something they have showed all season, but this one was really sweet.

Beating the Fury put the Flyers in the Final against BRYC Supernovas whom they have played three times before - 1 -1 - 1.  In a tense game that started with the Flyers scoring on the opening kickoff and was tied 1 -1 at half, the Flyers were finally defeated 3 - 1 on some very good team play by the Supernovas.  The Flyers played their hearts out, but the Supernovas just wanted it a little bit more.  The game was very even with both teams going on the offensive, up and down the field.   The goalies from both teams really played well and Herndon had many opportunities but was just not able to get the foot on the ball.  But it was a great game and the Flyers took second place for the first time in their career.

GREAT JOB FLYERS - and good luck in the next game and next season.

April 14, 2002 - Flyers vs.  BRYC Super Novas

In the second game of the season the Herndon Flyers traveled to Robinson HS to play the BRYC Super Novas. Lauren scored early in the first half to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead, a lead they held until the Super Novas tied the score seconds before halftime. The Flyers regained the lead in the second half on a penalty kick by Colleen  only to have the Super Novas once again tie the score at 2-2. It did not look good for the Flyers when the Super Novas were awarded a penalty kick with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game but Kelsey, playing goalie, made an outstanding save to preserve the 2-2 tie. The entire team played well and aggressive in the game against he Super Novas. There were a number of scrapes and bruises to signify the effort.

April 7, 2002 - Flyers vs. Red Hot Chilli Peppers

The Herndon Flyers girls soccer team (U-10) kicked off the Spring 2002 season with a game against the VYS Red Hot Chille Peppers. The game was exciting with offense and defense played well by both teams. The Flyers came back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime to battle the Chille Peppers to a 3-3 tie. Scoring goals for the Flyers were Colleen Bannigan, Christina Kangelaris and a "team goal" by Colleen Bannigan, Melanie Delaney and Maggie Connealy.
