Recreational Program Overview

The HYS Recreational program offers an introductory, fun playing environment for players of all skill levels between the ages of 4-19. It is primarily a volunteer-based program that typically serves more than 1,000 players from Herndon, Chantilly, Reston, and Sterling.

The U5 Microkicks program, the first of its kind in the area, is lead by Herndon professional staff with education and licensing to instruct the youngest players.

Ages U6-U10 are considered part of the House League, where HYS players form 6-12 teams in each age group (depending on registration numbers) to train with their team once during the week and compete in games against other HYS teams at the same Herndon location every Saturday.

For ages U11 and above, Herndon competes in the new NCSL Rec League. Depending on registration numbers, Herndon will form several teams in each age group to compete against other clubs in the area for games on Saturdays. While HYS teams train 1-2 times/week at the same field in Herndon, the games are split between home games on a Herndon turf field and at other nearby clubs for away games--requiring some travel.

  • Offered in both the Fall (September - November) and Spring (March - June)
  • Practice 1-2 times/week with a game on Saturdays
  • Teams are led by volunteer coaches
  • Focus is on fun!

At the end of each season, the most talented players in Herndon's U11-U19 are groups are selected to play in the All-Star Tournament with many other recreational clubs and represent Herndon. Herndon can form several All-Stars teams in their age groups. Players may accept the invitation to play on the All-Star team, and will continue practicing after the rec season is finished to participate in the tournament. In the Fall season, Herndon hosts the area's All-Star Cup tournament the third weekend in November. In the Spring season, FPYC hosts the All-Star tournament the third weekend in June.
